Confident Seahawks Rout Parkside, 18-8

By: Shawn J. Soper via Maryland Coast Dispatch

BERLIN- With veteran players all over the field, Decatur’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team is brimming with confidence as they embark on the 2013 campaign and backed up last week with an 18-8 thrashing of familiar rival Parkside in the season opener.

The Seahawks feature three senior captains, including standout goalkeeper Brooks Gilbert, defensive stalwart Colin May and Andrew Ternahan, who plays all over the field. Decatur is deep and talented at both ends of the field and in the all-important middle with veteran returning players and a flock of young Seahawks ready to spread their wings this year.

In addition to Gilbert in goal and senior co-captain Colin May, the Decatur defense will also feature returning starter Joe Flounlacker and Connor May. In the middle of the field is a strong crew of veterans, newcomers and transfers including Riley McCabe, Jared King, Jackson Mumford, Matt LeCompte and Worcester Prep transfer Henry Hastings among others. Up front, the Seahawks should have plenty of firepower with Corey Gwin, Shane Moore, Jake Lathroum and Ternahan, who will also play long-stick middie in some formations.

Last week in the season opener on the road against longtime rival Parkside, the Seahawks put it all together in an 18-8 rout of the Rams. Ternahan led the offense with two goals and two assists, while Gwin scored four goals and McCabe adding three. Several other Seahawks got in the scorebook including LeCompte, Lathroum, Henry Hastings and even defender Joe Flounlacker. McCabe was outstanding in getting possession for Decatur and jumpstarting the offense by winning 14 of 21 faceoffs.

According to Lathroum, the Seahawks are a talented group and are poised for another big season this year.

“They’re a really confident bunch, almost to the point I have to rein them in sometimes,” he said. “That’s a good problem to have because their very enthusiastic and very coachable.”
