Hits Just Keep Coming for Decatur

By: Shawn J. Soper via Maryland Coast Dispatch

BERLIN- The hits just kept on coming for Decatur’s varsity baseball team this week with a shortened 19-1 win over visiting Washington on Monday.

With the win over the Jaguars on Monday, the Seahawks improved to 5-0 on the season and continued to clobber the ball. Through five games, the Seahawks have outscored their opponents by a combined 88-3. They are averaging just over 17 runs a game. Although the total is inflated somewhat by a 34-1 win over Pocomoke last week, the Seahawks also have a 12-1 win over Mardela, a 14-0 win over Crisfield last week and the 19-1 win over Washington on Monday.

As impressive as the Seahawks have been at the plate, they have been equally dominating on the mound. Decatur has two shutouts and have yielded only one run in each of their three other contests. Against Crisfield last week, Teron Tyre had three hits, while Chase Coursey and Mike O’Neill had two hits each. Steve Ruggiere had an RBI triple and James Dibuo was the winning pitcher.

Against Washington on Monday, freshman Grant Donahue went the distance on the mound, allowing one run on five hits and striking out 10 in the game shortened to five innings. The Seahawks blew the game wide open in the second inning as 18 batters came to the plate and 12 runs scored. Ruggiere drove in three runs on two hits in the inning, while O’Neill and Connor Molloy each had two RBIs in the inning. Every Seahawk in the lineup scored at least once in the decisive second.

On Tuesday, the Seahawks survived their first real test, beating Snow Hill, 2-0, to improve to 6-0. Ruggiere threw a complete game shutout, striking out 10. Donahue and Ruggiere each drove in runs and Justin Meekins had a triple.
