Worcester Girls Win Karl Wolf Tourney

By: Shawn J. Soper via Maryland Coast Dispatch

BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s girls’ varsity lacrosse team won two big games to capture the 12th Annual Karl Wolf Tournament last weekend.

The Mallards traveled over to the western shore last weekend to compete in the 12th Annual Karl Wolf Tournament, a boys’ and girls’ tournament at Howard High School. The tournament is named for Karl Wolf, who was the leading scorer for the 1984 Howard High boys’ team that reached the state championship game. In 1999, Wolf lost his battle with Hodgkin’s disease after a long fight.

The Mallards routed Reservoir, 20-11, in the tournament semifinals with a balances scoring attack that saw just about everybody get into the scorebook. Sophie Brennan, Lilly DiNardo and Meredith Soule each scored three goals, while Frankie Willing, Cynthia Delaney, Molly Soule and Kristen Shriner each scored two goals. Meredith Smith, Alex Bruder and Molly Marshall each scored single goals.

The win over Reservoir put Worcester in the tournament championship game against host Howard. The two teams played a tight game the whole way before Worcester emerged. Worcester led, 6-5, at the half and went on to win 9-8 to capture the tournament championship. DiNardo led the Mallards with five goals and was named the recipient of the Karl Wolf Award for the tournament’s most valuable player. Smith had two goals, while Delaney and Bruder each scored single tallies. Maddie Pilchard recorded eight saves for the Mallards, while Carolyn Dorey had two saves.
