And they're off! Bathtub races set to launch Friday in Berlin

BERLIN — Friday night, North Main Street will serve as a racetrack for an assortment of zany hand-made racers to be driven by representatives of local businesses during the traditional The Berlin Bathtub Races.

The 21st annual Berlin Bathtub Races, which is free for spectators, will begin at 6 p.m. with a parade featuring each unique bathtub racer. At least 13 businesses in the area will compete in a 250-foot-long drag race between Pitts and Jefferson streets.

Races will begin at 6:15 p.m. and continue until the event’s conclusion at 8 p.m.

Additionally, at least 10 businesses around the downtown area will provide entertainment for bystanders.

The Art Studios at the Berlin Chamber of Commerce at 14 S. Main St., will showcase art from featured artists Jim Adcock, James Coltellino and Don Grafer, along with watercolor artist Mary Doellgas.

Baked Dessert and Café at 4 Bay St., will serve samples of craft beers with food. Also, artist Patrick Henry will show off his collection of works from Henry Fine Arts, which is located in the same building.

Berlin Coffee House at 17 Jefferson St., will feature music from Knuckle Heads and art of artist Kim Zimmerman.

The Worcester County Arts Council at 6 Jefferson St., will present watercolors painted by Dee Brua while also holding a reception during the event.

Bungalow Love at 12 Williams St., will display silhouette paper cuttings from Leah Mowry.

Burley Oak Brewing Company, 10016 Old Ocean City Blvd., will be visited by photographer Nick Denny to display is works.

Victorian Charm, 100 N. Main St., will celebrate the birthday of its mascot, Josh, and serve complementary food and drink for people and their dogs.

Waters Edge Gallery at 2 S. Main St. will unveil a new set of monotype prints along with holding a reception.

Waystead Inn, 15 Harrison Ave., will hold a reception with artist Crystal Collins and acoustic musicians Jamie McDonald and Alan McDuffie.

The Church Mouse at 101 N. Main St., will stay open for business and donate all proceeds from Friday’s sales to the Berlin Youth Club and Worcester Youth and Family Counseling Services.
