SUMMER SURVIVAL KIT
As the daily temperatures soar to 95 and more than 100 degrees, inside your car it can reach from temperatures of more than 100 to 120 degrees. I talked with my friends and found out that, like me, they carry a small survival bag in their car. In the spring, fall and winter, you don’t really have to be concerned. But in the hot summer days, you do.
TIP # 1 – In my survival bag, or my just in case bag, I carry two bottles of water, a couple of granola bars and a big bag of my nut mix; hair spray, deoderant, perfume and a little makeup bag with liquid makeup, blush, mascara and lipstick. Any of these items at over 100 degrees would be ruined. The water would probably boil and taste horrible, the granola bars would be mush, the nuts would not be edible, the makeup surely would melt; especially the lipstick. My solution to this was to go to Walmart and buy a small cooler, a couple of the little freezer packs and you’re all set. You’ll have a fresh cold bottle of water at all times, and you know I’m all about drinking lots of water every day, fresh cool snacks, maybe throw an apple in there; the makeup will stay cool and fresh, ready for your touchups any time of the day or night. You just have to remember to refreeze the ice packs when you get home so that they’re ready for the next day. And FYI, if you happen to have any leftovers from your lunch or dinner date, then just put them inside your cooler for the trip home; how cool is that - no pun intended.
TIP #2 – I went to the beach the other day and wanted a snack, so I pulled out my special nut mix. I offered it to a friend. He said, “yum, where did you get this?” I went on to explain that I made it myself and had not bought it in a store. He asked me to make some for him. I had shared this mix in a previous article with you all. I think it’s the healthiest mix you can eat and not get caught up in the fast food world. So, I’m sharing this mix with you again.
Walnuts (the best buy is at BJ’s) - A handful when you are feeling that hunger pang will hold you over until you can eat a healthy meal. The health benefits include preventing heart attacks, lowering cholesterol, and it’s an aid in preventing diabetes.
Almonds - They help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease; high in magnesium, copper and riboflavin, which all act as an energy booster and are high in protein.
Pistachios - Known as the ‘powerhouse’ nut, they are a great source of Phytosterols, a natural plant compound that blocks the absorption of dietary cholesterol. They help you lose weight and they’re also great for your heart.
Dried Cranberries - They support a healthy bladder and urinary tract. They also prevent bacteria from forming as ecoli and other infections.
Sunflower Seeds - High in Vitamin E, they lower your heart attack risk, lower cholesterol and help to provide higher brain clarity. The are high in phenolic acids that are anti-inflammatory, immune system boosters and have other anti-aging benefits. Out of the 18 amino acids found in these nuts, ARGININE has played a vital role in healing wounds, immune function and also may be very effective against prostate, ovarian and even breast cancer. I would call that a Super Nut!
Pecans - This nut is one of the most anti-oxidant rich; prevents plaque from forming in the arteries, and how about a pecan pie during the holidays.
I researched the benefits of every one of these nuts before I put my Super Nut Mix together. Remember, beauty is from the inside out so pay attention to what you put in your body.
