Summer of 2013 is almost over. This season a whole group of family and friends gathered on the beach in front of the Castle in the Sand for Sunday Funday. Each week some disturbing issues kept coming up in conversation. I was urged by those friends to write about those issues - so here goes. Listen up people/vacationers to our beautiful town of Ocean City, Md. We, the people who live in this paradise and call it home, want you to know that there is a beach etiquette. You come to our town once or twice a year for a week or a long weekend and all the respect your mother and father taught you is left at home. How you dress, how you act and the language that you use? We want and need you to come visit our resort and to enjoy yourself; so maybe just a little advice will go a long way.
Beauty Tip #1 – Our beaches are beautiful. They don’t stay that way by magic. Every day, rain or shine, as you are sitting down for dinner and are sound asleep in your clean, well-maintained hotel rooms, the beaches are cleaned. Large machines run by our hard-working town employees sweep the beaches and gather tons and tons of your trash, way into the night. I’m just curious, why is it when you come to our beach, you think you can just get up and leave your trash sit there. I watched a guy dig a hole, bury his trash in the sand and get up and walk away. When you are at home, do you pull back your rug, dig a hole in your floor and cover it up with the rug? When you’re in bed, do you stick your wrappers under your mattress? I know you’re on vacation but the little elves that clean up after you when you’re at home are not with you. Please have a little respect for our beautiful beaches and – ONLY LEAVE YOUR FOOTPRINTS!
Beauty Tip #2 – People, there is a self-respect dress code, isn’t there? I am not at all one for the local police or anyone else telling me how to dress. On the other hand, why not police yourself. Look in the mirror! Is your underwear showing? Pull your pants up. Is your bra showing? Adjust your blouse or buy the proper bra for your top. Is your dress see-through? Add a layer. And definitely put on some panties and a bra. Last time I looked, Ocean City did not allow any stripper clubs; so what’s up with that look? I was at Fager’s Island where I saw a young lady with a see-through dress. Myself and many other curious onlookers took notice and all we could do was shake our heads. TOTAL FASHION FAUX PAS! It wasn’t pretty. Ladies, if you are not laying on the beach or at a beach bar, then cover it up. There are some really cute sundresses and beach bathing suit cover-ups that can take you all the way to drinks and dinner. As I was leaving Coconuts on Sunday, I took notice of a group of young people walking down the street. Two of the young ladies had on string bikinis - and nothing else! Cover it up, have a little respect for yourself! You could cause a traffic accident. My friend Becky asked that when you’re buying a new bathing suit, buy one that fits you. Having things and stuff hanging out and exposed doesn’t work on any beach. Please don’t buy a bathing suit that’s too small just so you can show off your tattoo or your belly ring. Beauty is shown on the outside as well as the inside.
Beauty Tip #3 – The language you use reflects your IQ. If you have to use the ‘f’ word in every sentence, then maybe you should sign up for English 101 class at Wor-Wic. Just saying. Using this language makes you look and sound ugly. Have respect for yourself and the people around you. In many establishments in Ocean City, you will be asked to leave. We are a family town and we want to keep it that way.
Thank you to my friends for the input and ideas for this week’s article. I hope you all continue to enjoy reading them. Whether you agree or disagree, I think we are all on the same page. RESPECT OUR TOWN AND YOURSELF!
