Berlin Student Recovering After Bus Accident; ‘Physical Therapy’ Begins On Injured Right Leg

By: Shawn J. Soper via Maryland Coast Dispatch

BERLIN — A 10-year-old Berlin Intermediate School student is on the road to recovery this week after suffering a broken leg and other injuries after colliding with a school bus while riding his bicycle in Berlin.
Shortly before 3 p.m. last Friday, the 10-year-old boy was riding his bicycle in the area of Flower Street in Berlin when he collided with a school bus. The school bus was not occupied at the time. The BIS student suffered significant injuries and was flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore.
Because of confidentiality laws regarding juveniles and reports on medical conditions, the extent of the victim’s injuries were not released for most of the week.
The investigation into the cause of the collision was still ongoing this week. However, it appears from sources the school bus driver was not at fault and the incident was an unfortunate accident. No charges are pending in the case.
Barbara Witherow, Coordinator of Public Relations and Special Programs for Worcester County Public Schools, confirmed late Thursday that the boy is recovering from the injuries he sustained to his right leg.
“The mother of the student injured in the bus accident last Friday [Oct. 25] has given Worcester County Public Schools approval to provide The Dispatch with a brief update on the student’s condition.  The student is at Johns Hopkins Children Center in Baltimore and is recovering from injuries to his right leg,” Witherow said. “He has undergone some medical procedures and has started physical therapy.  A release date from the hospital has not yet been determined.
On behalf of the school system, Witherow added, “We are so thankful that the student is doing well and we are looking forward to his return to school.”
