Walk, bike, run or push a stroller for the inaugural trail event that kicks off with a ribbon cutting for the Safe Routes to School Program at Berlin Intermediate School at 9:30 a.m.
The idea behind Trail Mix 2012 is to promote the town’s heritage, natural areas and resources and to foster better connectivity between our parks, schools and shopping areas.
2012 marks the start of a new tradition with the 1st Annual Take Pride in Berlin Week. The weeklong activities commence on Saturday, April 21 with the annual Clean-Up Day and continue throughout the week until the grand finale on Saturday, April 28 with the 1st Annual Berlin Trail Mix.
Taking pride in Berlin isn’t just about cleaning up, according to organizers, although spring is a great time to freshen up the yard, start a new house project or garden or get a healthy outlook on life. The community can work together to make routes around town a little safer for walkers and bikers and identify opportunities for new routes, perhaps even trails around town.
Berlin is fortunate to enjoy the benefits that a small town offers and fostering safer ways to travel around town, to the grocery store and to the park benefits everyone. A network of trails will result in less traffic on the roads and make it a little easier to get out and get moving.
At Trail Mix 2012, attendees will be able to explore possible trails around town and rate your favorite route. Organizers are planning separate walk, bike and run loops that will offer participants choices based on their ability, ranging from half-mile loop for families with small children and up to a five-mile walk and run routes.
The International Mountain Bike Association, Eastern Shore Chapter will be on location promoting trails throughout the lower shore and the 4-H program will be promoting its “Steps Out” program.
All participants will receive a reusable bag courtesy of Grow Berlin Green, Town of Berlin, Main Street Program, Worcester County Health Department and International Mountain Bike Association packed with tips on safe biking, healthy lifestyles and ways to conserve resources.
