Best Bites

“If it’s on television, you can watch it at Smitty McGee’s,” says owner Dawn McGee as she describes football season at Smitty McGee’s. The bar and restaurant carries the NFL Ticket and ESPN Game Plan for its high definition, flat screen televisions that seem to cover every inch of the walls at the restaurant.  The popular bar and restaurant is an official retailer for the Delaware Sports Lottery. Rather than driving to the closest Delaware casino, football fans can spend the day at Smitty McGee’s cheering on favorite teams, taking a chance on winning big money, and enjoying a plethora of food and drink specials.
From 11 a.m. until close on Sunday, and during every NFL game, Smitty McGee’s features $2 Sliders, 50-cent Clams and Oysters, and discounts on Wings, Meatball Subs, and Steamed Shrimp. Slider flavors include meatball, fried grouper, chicken fingers, rockfish fingers, and cheeseburger. Also on Sunday, you can pair your discounted food with Smitty McGee’s Bloody Mess—a build-your-own-Bloody-Mary bar that’s sure to cure what ails you. In fact, Smitty McGee’s boasts an impressive collection of trophies for awards from Ocean City’s Best Bloody Mary Contests.
In addition to awesome football specials, Smitty McGee’s has a packed calendar for winter 2012, including live music on Thursday through Saturday nights and weekday lunch specials from 11 AM until 3 PM for under $6. On Friday, enjoy Chicken Pot Pie or Grouper or Rockfish Fish Tacos for lunch. House band Randy Lee Ashcraft performs from 8 PM until midnight. On Saturday, enjoy the Bloody Mary bar from 11 AM until 3 PM. A live band performs every Saturday night at 8 PM.
On Monday, after you recover from Sunday’s NFL festivities, Smitty McGee’s offers Beef Stew or a Hot Roast Beef Sandwich for lunch. “Mexican Monday” is from 5-10 PM, featuring a full Mexican menu, plus $1.75 Beef Tacos. Continuing the Mexican theme, Monday night presents Corona and margarita specials. Each Tuesday, Beef Stew and Hot Turkey Sandwiches are the lunch specials. “Wing Thing” takes place from 7 PM until close with discounts on a full range of Miller drinks. Team Trivia begins at 6:30 on Tuesday. Wednesday brings Hot Roast Beef and Chicken Quesadilla lunch specials, and “Burger & Miller Night” from 7-10 PM. On Thursday, get a kick start to your weekend with Crunchy Chicken Caesar Wrap or Roast Beef Gravy Train lunch specials and Shrimp & Coors Night from 7 PM until close. Randy Lee Ashcraft showcases his musical talent from 8 PM until midnight on Thursday.
Joey Steward and I experienced a delightful dinner at Smitty McGee’s on Tuesday night during Team Trivia hosted by DJ Sharon. The entire dining room was packed full of teams and contestants eager to win the Team Trivia challenge. Murph, the longtime bartender, greeted us at the door and guided us toward a four-top table in the middle of all the trivia action. Our server, Sarah, gave us the details of the Seasonal Menu, which is still available for a limited time at Smitty McGee’s. We were happy to discover that Smitty McGee’s, which is located in Fenwick Island, Delaware, carries craft beer from nearby Delaware breweries, including 16 Mile and Dogfish Head.
We started our meal with an order of Fish Tacos from the Seasonal Menu and Killer Nachos from the permanent menu. Served on flour tortillas with fresh salsa, shredded lettuce, fresh squeezed lime, cheddar-jack cheese, and spicy boom-boom sauce, the Fish Tacos are your choice of hand-breaded grouper or beer battered rockfish. The Killer Nachos are messy deliciousness, piled sky high with chili, salsa, black olives, jalapeños, and a blend of melted cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese.
For our next course, we ordered the Key West Wings from the permanent menu. Smitty McGee’s is famous for its Buffalo Wings. The Key West Wings are sweet and spicy with garlic and island seasonings. Crispy on the outside, the juicy wings slide right off the bone. Other Wings flavors include mild, medium, nuclear, inferno, Asian sesame, Old Bay, bourbon, BBQ, honey BBQ, garlic parmesan, and naked. We also ordered the Hawaiian Ciabatta—baked ham, caramelized pineapple, bacon, fried onions, honey BBQ sauce, and Swiss cheese. Other toasted Ciabatta sandwiches on the seasonal menu are Smoke House Ciabatta with smoked turkey, smoked cheddar, bacon, and chipotle ranch, and Texas Roast Beef Ciabatta with hot roast beef, honey BBQ, smoked cheddar, bacon, and fried onions.
Fresh Ground Beef Burgers are crowd pleasers at Smitty McGee’s. Try the Montreal Bacon Bleuburger, which is flavored with Montreal steak seasoning and topped with bacon and bleu cheese. Or, try the Bourisn Burger or Crabby Patty topped with crab dip. Quarter-pound hotdogs, including a Chili Cheese Dog, are also on the menu.
Smitty McGee’s is the perfect hotspot to chow down on a monstrous sandwich. Grouper, Rockfish, and Yellow Fin Tuna Steak are just a few of many sandwich options. Joey’s eyes lit up when he saw the Tenderloin sandwich—grilled filet mignon topped with sautéed onions, melted provolone, and horseradish sauce. I had my eye on the Shrimp, Bacon & Cheddar sandwich, which is served open face on rye bread with bacon and melted cheddar-jack cheese. Dirty Chicken, Crabby Chick, and Bourisn Chicken are a few more sandwiches at Smitty McGee’s.
Maryland Crab Soup, Cream of Crab Soup, and Chili Bake are excellent comfort foods on a crisp fall day. A Raw Bar is available, serving up Oysters, Garlic Mussels, Steamed Shrimp, Clams Casino, and Stuffed Mushroom Caps. For health-conscience eaters, Smitty McGee’s offers many salad recipes, including Greek, Caesar, Spinach, Tropical, Wedge, Southwestern, and Tomato & Mozzarella. Other Appetizers on the menu are Crab Topped Cheese Fries, Ritzy Mac & Cheese, Grouper Fingers, Hot Crab Dip, Garlic Crab Toast, Buffalo Chicken Dip, and much more.
DJ Wax will host the annual costume contest at Smitty McGee’s for Halloween. Call 302-436-4716, follow the restaurant on twitter or Facebook, or visit www.smittymcgees.com  or http://smittymcgees.blogspot.com  for more details. Smitty McGee’s is located at 37234 Lighthouse Road (Route 54) in West Fenwick Island, Delaware. Make sure to stop into Smitty McGee’s to watch your favorite NFL team, play Sports Lottery, and take advantage of stellar food and drink specials.
