OCEAN CITY – The Boardwalk is now a hot spot, and it’s free for many in keeping with Ocean City’s summer-long campaign to offer free activities and amenities.

A couple of weeks ago, Comcast announced its Xfinity WiFi service is available in parts of Ocean City for no additional charge to Xfinity Internet customers. Xfinity WiFi now provides fast wireless Internet access at points along the Boardwalk and non-Xfinity Internet customers can also enjoy complimentary service through this Sunday, Aug. 12.

At the conclusion of this week’s Mayor and City Council meeting, Mayor Rick Meehan shared the good news.

“It is a great service to our community and a great service to our visitors,” he said. “People today when they go away they want to stay in contact and this is a great way they can do it. It is also another amenity that is free for the Comcast customers and there are a tremendous number of Comcast customers in this area and mid-Atlantic area that come here to visit.”

To access it, Xfinity Internet customers and non-customers should look for “xfinitywifi” on the list of available networks on their wireless device and follow prompts to begin their WiFi session. Xfinity WiFi provides Xfinity Internet customers the ability to access thousands of outdoor and indoor WiFi hotspots available in locations nationwide.

“Our customers are increasingly leveraging wireless devices, platforms and apps, and looking for ways to enjoy their entertainment and communications outside of their homes,” Comcast Regional Vice President of Sales and Marketing Alan Clairmont said. “With Xfinity WiFi, we’re providing them a fast wireless Internet experience while they’re out shopping, eating or otherwise enjoying their time in Ocean City.”

In addition, Comcast recently announced it doubled the speeds of two of its existing Internet speed tiers for customers in the Ocean City area at no additional cost. Xfinity Blast! customers are now receiving download speeds of up to 50 Mbps (formerly 25 Mbps), and Extreme 50 customers now receive speeds of up to 105 Mbps (formerly 50 Mbps). This marked the seventh time since 2002 that Comcast has increased speeds for its customers.

Comcast is also currently offering Xfinity Internet customers other value-added services at no additional cost, such as the Constant Guard security suite, the most comprehensive suite of online protection, Secure Backup & Share to back up valuable files and anti- identity theft program.
