Coco Nights

By: Brenda Golden via Coconut Times
Are we having fun yet? You bet we are - but I need a nap. LOL! It may be the last weekend in July, but there’s still a lot of summer to enjoy. The Purple Moose is bringing back one of their most popular bands this weekend, Surreal. I run into people all the time who tell me they plan their weekends or vacations at the shore to be able to hear Surreal. With Walt’s soaring vocals, Brian’s blazing guitar work, Will’s fiery and entertaining bass moves and Rene’s powerful delivery on drums, this band has all the right ingredients for a guaranteed good time on the dance floor. If you’re into hard rock, come on back Thur. for a band called Silvertung. Haven’t heard them yet but we know that every band is great at the World Famous Purple Moose.
Several of our local bands are stepping up their game to play multiple dates this weekend. For example: 2 Much Stuff is showin’ off their stuff at the 45th St. Taphouse on Fri. and they’ll be playing again on Sat. at that cool place where people go to jive ... Jive. I ususally add ‘w/ Joe Smooth’ so everyone will know that this band can boast one of the best sax players in the business. And not only can he make the instrument ‘talk’ to you, but he can sing really well, too. John Remy is an amazing guitarist with gritty powerful vocals as well, Honu plays keys, guitar and sings and veteran drummer Ed knows how to lay down the beat. If you haven’t heard them yet, here’s your chance - two chances. Don’t blow it.
Another prime example of a fantabulous band highly in demand ... Tranzfusion. We can hear them Fri. at BJ’s on the Water and again on Sat. at Coins. I’ve written about this band many times, so regular readers will be bored but I must tell visiting readers that if you only go out one time for music while you’re here, make it to hear Tranzfusion. Audiences are always amazed at the musical and vocal level of expertise from this band. Not only are they each the best they can be on their parts, but they have been together so long (nearly 30 years) that they blend and meld perfectly, too. What kind of music do they play? I like to call it classic album rock because they cover many popular artists playing several of each as perfectly as what you would hear on the album. You might say they’re the ultimate tribute band - they just cover them all. Fantastic!
The Bo Dickerson Band is another with two dates this weekend. The deck at M.R. Ducks has been experiencing some serious boot scootin’ to the modern (and some classic) country sounds of this group. This Fri. they’ll be thumpin’ the boards again at Ducks. Fans up at Smitty McGee’s pack the house every time they play there, as they will again this Sat. So pull on your boots, baby, and party.
Also at M.R. Ducks this Sun. is one of our all-time favorites, another band who has been together 30 years, and it shows - Bird Dog & The Road Kings. Now I mean it shows in that they are well synced with one another - the playing, the vocals - all right on the money. Bird Dog is one of the few artists who play around here who gets more requests for his original material than for covers. He is an accomplished song writer; as is his bass player Charlie. I love his songs, too ... “Back Home In Memphis” and his new one “Somerset County.” Both men have such a way with words, and the music and delivery are first rate. Can’t wait to hear them again.
Talk about a way with words - Dr. Harmonica (Mark Kenneally) ranks right up there with the best of them with such orginals as “Bad Habits.” His funky blues and superb harmonica are the best. Hey, Doc, I’m sure you’ve had lots of experiences that would make good lyrics. Tell us some new stories, Doc. The challenge is on. Meanwhile there’s no challenge at all to the fact that this group will deliver a funky, bluesy performance at the 45th St. Taphouse.
I checked out the new Ropewalk Oyster House in Fenwick last week and our friend Pat O’Brennan was playing there, as he will be again today (Fri.) at 2:30 ... and every Fri. What a cool place - downstairs bar and lots of dining and an open-air upstairs bar as well. And the food is excellent; you’re gonna love it.
I went to the new Fenwick Oasis to hear Old School last night - great job. Our old friend DJ Rupe will be there Sat. Another new party place on Rt. 54. Say hi to Reggie.
No Lauren Glick around this weekend ‘cause she’s in New York auditioning for “The Voice.” Hundreds of good wishes and prayers going her way, right? Party safe, my friends.
