Coco Nights

Hey, y’all. Are you ready to party?! Dew Tour was awesome, right? Hope you enjoy all the fantastic photos in this issue. Now we get to celebrate 4th of July all week long with great music everywhere. Following is what C.T. writer Jenny Samuels is looking forward to:
Mix the best elements of reggae, hip-hop, punk rock, and ska, and you’ll get the upcoming featured act in Seacrets’ Summer Concert Series 2013—The Dirty Heads. Hailing from California, the rock reggae band has toured nationally with bands like 311, O.A.R., Pepper, Matisyahu, and Sublime with Rome. The Dirty Heads’ debut album, Any Port in the Storm, featured popular tracks like “Stand Tall” and “Lay Me Down.” The crowd at Seacrets will be rocking this Sunday evening, June 30, at 7 pm, to songs from the band’s follow-up album, Cabin by the Sea. Seacrets has an exciting array of rock and reggae bands on tap this summer, including Ballyhoo!, Reel Big Fish, G Love and Special Sauce, Passafire, Donavon Frankenreiter, and more. Keep reading Coconut Times for dates and details. – Jenny
Sounds like a winner! Fager’s Island is in my ‘spotlight’ this week with an encore performance by Mayday Mayday after the Monday Deck Party. We all remember Niki Barr, right? She returns to Fager’s with a hot band guaranteed to rock your flip-flops off. Joining her is Island Styles (Jimmie’s Chicken Shack) on “melodic, powerful and ripping” guitar solos, Scott Ensign on bass and BJ Kerwin on drums. As Marla (Ocean 98.1) says, “I just love a band with a hot chick on guitar,” as in Kathy Denk of Full Circle. Gotcha, Marla. Hot, powerful, dynamic, great showmanship can all be adjectives describing vibrant performer, Niki Barr. Check ‘em out.
What we’ve all been waiting for, the kick-off of the Summer Tribute schedule at Fager’s - no better way to begin than with that mighty and magnificent Pink Floyd tribute band, Set The Controls. If you look them up on the web, you’ll find that each player has been into music, and the Floyd, from an early age; and each has been and is playing in different bands as well. The front lineup is amazing with Patrick Himes (vocals/guitar/organ), Tod Weidner (guitar/vocals), Denny Presley (guitar/vocals/keyboard) and Jordan Hampton (bass/keyboard) all providing the complex musicality and lyrics for which Pink Floyd is so well known. The foundation upon which this is all built is provided by the unparalled percussion and drums performance of Scott Soifer. And the ‘icing on the cake,’ ‘the piece de resistance’ is in the person of Blair Breitreiter Smart. Blair is a treasure, providing the intricate keyboard work (several of them) and soaring background vocals. But when she really draws the audience’s applause is when she steps out front to wail on the saxophone. I am so excited to hear them again, as they present a night of flawless Pink Floyd music. And get this - they will return for an encore performance on Tues. Yay!! Coming up are more tributes to: Neil Diamond, U2, Journey and more, all on Sunday nights.
Unbelievable night at The Purple Moose to hear that hard-rocking gal group Judas Priestess last night. Wow!! This weekend one of my favorite bands returns to The Moose - Surreal. You’ll not find a better ‘80s-’90s rock band anywhere - every song perfection from Brian on guitar, Walt on amazing vocals & guitar, Will on bass and Rene on drums. You’re gonna love ‘em!
I had the pleasure of meeting Mike Beavan recently who, as he says, “has been banging on everything from pots and pans to desks and books since he could crawl.” He and his band Badmoon will play at Hooters in West OC on Sat., June 29. Guitarist Brian Kahat formed Badmoon with great players from Howard County, Md. Bassist Matt Sherman, from a family of fine stringed musicians, played bass cello for many years. Matt recruited neighbor Dan Peck out of “retirement” to spice up the lead guitar duties that he had honed touring the Mid-Atlantic region in the ‘80s. Covering lead vocals and keyboards is Glen Tschirgi. Experience = great rock.
As always, there are so many more great musical acts to catch around our awesome town. Get out and enjoy the music and remember to always party safe!
