Coco Nights

By: Brenda Golden via Coconut Times
Hi, music lovers. I’m havin’ a ball though I must admit to feeling a little wear & tear from all this activity. I’m also bummed out with all this talk about the summer being over. No, say it isn’t so! Of course we’re not going to stop having fun; in fact maybe even more as I’ll be able to scoot up and down the highway faster. LOL! I know what Cathy’s talking about in Sonic Notes; I’ve often wished for a Star Trek transporter so I can hit all the hot spots.
M.R. Ducks was one such hot spot last Sat. as The Klassix rocked the dock. We actually got a triple dose this week as they played Thur. night at Fager’s Island and again on the deck Mon. Everyone is in love with this band. The music is superb, scanning decades of tunes, and the vocals from Holly, Bill & Steve are excellent - plus they’re just so friendly and fun. It was a pleasure to hear Nashville recording artist Brynn Marie singing with her partner Josh during the band breaks. What a wonderful voice and presence she has singing her own tunes from her new CD Things Change to covering other songs from such artists as Pat Benatar with whom she has just finished touring. She has just been signed with a major promotional company so I know we are going to be hearing big things from this country gal.
Captain Fantastic as Elton John was a lot of fun last Sun. and Fager’s wraps up its Summer Sunday tribute series with The Chest Pains. All locals know and love this band, so this is for our visitors: if you like the alternative rock music of the ‘80s, you’re gonna love this group too. Lead vocalist Byron Anthony has that special quality in his voice that is perfect for their music, Chris Button is the proverbial guitar wizard, Jeff Davis grooves on the bass and Joe Mama is outstanding on drums. Hey, congratulations to Joe & his event organizers who raised more than $14,000 at the annual Joe Mama Day event at Coconuts that will benefit the Childrens House by the Sea. Way to go!
The last time I saw Tear The Roof Off was at Johnny’s Pizza Pub and they were terrific! This is probably the only band around that plays traditional blues in addition to more rockin’ blues. Hearing them play you really get the feel of where the ‘roll’ came from, growing into the American music that became known as  rock n’ roll. Vince Daddio on guitar and vocals takes his group, including amazing trumpet man Vince McCool, rollin’ through a night of great music that you can hear tonight (Fri.) at the Ocean Pines Yacht Club.
Jive was alive with the sounds of Bryan Clark singing and dancing to the music of the Rat Pack generation plus Michael Jackson - the audience always gathers around to watch him do the Michael moves. I was happy to join in the birthday celebration for local funny man Carmen - always has a joke to tell. Sat. Jive will feature 2 Much Stuff and let me tell you, they are just too much. These guys play a wide variety of music from blues to rock to creole - just a really good time. Joe Smooth on sax is always the icing on the cake as well as the egg that blends it all together, no matter what group he’s playing with. Forgive the analogy, Joe, may be be corny but you are the man. John plays a mean guitar and his vocal chops are rockin’ raw; I really like his original tunes too.
We can hear John Remy play first this weekend on Fri. at M.R. Ducks with Kevin Poole & The Gang. This collaboration of local musicians is always a lot of fun. Sat. Jimi Smooth & The Hit Time makes a rare appearance at Ducks and Sun. will be off the hook as usual with Tranzfusion. Parrrty!
It was a great time at The Purple Moose  last week with the always awesome Surreal. I swear, Walt could sing on any stage in any venue and blow the audience away. Incredible1 I’ll be heading to the Moose tonight for the Guns n’ Roses tribute band Appetite For Destruction; next Thur. will be Crossroads playing Bon Jovi. But this weekend if you wanna rock and dance, head to the Moose for Whitehouse Effect - great high energy show!
Here’s a group I really love, too, King’s Ransome w/ Danny Shivers on guitar & Brian playing keyboards, sax, flute, guitar - such a versatile group playing a huge repertoire of music - at The Pour House on Sat. Danny also has one of the best voices in the business; I can picture him in a musical on Broadway. You’ll love them, I promise.
Gotta go. Remember to party safe!
