Corvette Driver In Viral Cruisin Video Charged By OC Police

By: DispatchAdmin via Maryland Coast Dispatch

OCEAN CITY — The driver in a video depicting a donut and burnout on Coastal Highway that went viral and became symbolic of some of the complaints associated with the OC Cruisin’ event in May has been charged with numerous offenses.

On May 16, a blue Chevrolet Corvette was caught on video pulling out onto Coastal Highway from a parking lot on 94th Street and doing a donut in the middle of the highway before screeching down Coastal Highway at a high rate of speed with a plume of white smoke trailing behind in the midst of heavy traffic and numerous pedestrians and spectator lining the roadway. The incident was captured on video and was quickly distributed on social media via Street Racing Videos as an example of the ill behavior demonstrated by many of those indirectly associated with the annual event throughout the weekend.

Ocean City Police initiated an investigation after the video surfaced online and quickly went viral. With the assistance of numerous tips from citizens regarding the incident, OCPD officers were able to identify the driver as Harry M. Huntsman, 25, of Millersville, Md. Huntsman was subsequently stopped in Ocean City on Sunday, May 30, or two weeks after the Crusin’ incident, for an additional traffic violation and was issued citations for the May 16 incident at that time.

Huntsman has been charged for the May 16 incident with negligent driving, reckless driving, driving a motor vehicle in a manner intended to cause skidding, driving spinning wheels, driving a motor vehicle in a manner intended to cause excessive noise an failure to drive right of center. He faces fines of up to $1,000.

The incident became a poster child of sorts for a grassroots effort to find ways to tame the annual event each spring. In the wake of citizen complaints about the reckless driving, trash, noise and other incidents, town officials are exploring ways to curb some of the violations in the future. A large source of the problems associated with the event has been identified as the unregistered “hangers on” and not the officially registered participants.

In the meantime, the OCPD is reminding residents and visitors that negligent and reckless driving is extremely dangerous and could quickly result in tragedy. In an effort to keep Ocean City streets safe for motorists and pedestrians, the department has promised similar driving behavior will be met with strict enforcement and zero tolerance.
