Decatur Boys Notch First Win Of Season

By: DispatchAdmin via Maryland Coast Dispatch

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team notched its first win of the season this week, a tidy, well-played 12-3 victory over visiting North Caroline on Monday.

The young, but talented Seahawks struggled out of the gate a little as expected, but the early season schedule certainly didn’t do them any favors. Decatur opened with a narrow 11-9 loss to Saints Peter and Paul in game in which they trailed 5-0 at the half. Next up for the Seahawks was another classic battle with crosstown rival Worcester Prep and the Mallards prevailed, 13-5.

It didn’t get any easier for the Seahawks last Friday with a road game against old nemesis and two-time defending state champion Kent Island on the road. Decatur led briefly, 1-0, on a goal by Parker Wheeler just a little over a minute into the contest, but the Buccaneers got their offensive machine cranked up and reeled off eight straight goals to settle the issue. As usual, there was no quit in the Seahawks, but for now at least, Kent Island just had too much firepower for Decatur and took the 19-5 win. Robbie Duke scored two goals, while Wheeler and Dryden Brous contributed single goals.

On Monday, the Seahawks were home against another Bayside North opponent North Caroline and got their first win of the year, 12-3. The Seahawks played well on both ends of the field in the complete victory, and, of course in the middle with faceoff specialist Brous dominating as usual.

Despite the early losses against tough competition, the Seahawks have continued to improve and show signs of putting together strong wire-to-wire games. The Seahawks face Easton on the road tonight and return home on Monday for a game against always-tough Cape Henlopen on Monday.
