Decatur Softball Falls to Pocomoke, 5-1

By: Shawn J. Soper via Maryland Coast Dispatch

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity softball ran into a buzz saw on Monday, falling to visiting Pocomoke, 5-1, to drop to 1-3 early on in the season.

After thrashing Wicomico, 8-2, in the season opener last week, the Seahawks have found runs hard to come by in their last two games, both defeats. Decatur lost to Mardela, 8-0, last Thursday before falling again to Pocomoke, 5-1, on Monday. Against Pocomoke, the Seahawks ran into a dominate pitcher, Anna Brittingham, who struck a remarkable 14 Seahawks and scattered just five hits in a complete game win.

Decatur’s only run came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kelsey Snyder led off with a single. Snyder then stole second and was moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt. Snyder then scored on a passed ball with Brandee Hartz at the plate. Otherwise, Decatur barely got anything going at the plate against the dominating Brittingham.

Nonetheless, the scored remained tied at 1-1 going into the top of the sixth inning when the Warriors broke it open. Pocomoke got a leadoff double, but the runner was stranded after a great running catch by the Decatur right fielder. Then, a grounder to second was bobbled, allowing the Pocomoke runner to score from third. Pocomoke then got an inside-the-park homerun to make it 4-1 and another run-scoring double to make it 5-1.

Decatur had two more chances in the sixth and seventh innings, but went down quietly and fell, 5-1, to the Warriors. The Seahawks played Crisfield at home yesterday in a game played too late to be included in this edition. Decatur will compete in the Mardela Spring Softball Tournament tomorrow.
