Decatur Steamrolls Bennett, 49-0

By: DispatchAdmin via Maryland Coast Dispatch

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team steamrolled Bennett, 49-0, last week for their third straight win to move into the fourth playoff spot in the for the time being.
After falling to Easton, 28-14, on Homecoming in early October, the Seahawks have won three in a row to improve to 5-3 on the season and increase their chances for a postseason berth in the 3A-South tournament. After the loss to Easton, the Seahawks beat North Caroline, 20-6, Wicomico, 29-8, and now Bennett, 49-0, last Friday.
When the state districts were realigned this year, Decatur was moved to the 3A-South and is now competing with several teams from southern Maryland for one of four playoff berths in the region. After last weekend’s games, Decatur now has 30 total team points, good enough for the fourth and final spot. Thomas Stone is third with 34 points, Westlake is second with 36 and Huntingtown leads the 3A-South standings with 50 points. The Seahawks finish the regular season with Parkside tonight, followed by Snow Hill in the annual finale next weekend.
Against Bennett, Decatur got out to an early lead on its first possession on a 54-yard touchdown run by Demond Henry to go up 7-0. Decatur then went on a 63-yard drive capped off with an 11-yard touchdown run by P.J. Copes to make it 14-0. Copes then scored his second touchdown of the game on a 19-yard TD pass from quarterback Justin Meekins to put the Seahawks up 28-0 at the half.
In the third quarter, Copes scored again on a 63-yard touchdown run to make it 35-0 and set in motion the running clock. Decatur’s Dryden Brous made the most of his opportunities late in the game, rushing for 103 yards on just two carries and two touchdowns to close out the 49-0 win over the Clippers.
