Mallards Fall To Sabres 16-11

By: Shawn J. Soper via Maryland Coast Dispatch
BERLIN- A five-goal outburst by visiting Saints Peter and Paul early in
the second quarter on Tuesday proved to be the difference in the Sabres’
16-11 win over Worcester Prep, which otherwise played the visiting team
fairly even the rest of the way.
Worcester led 4-3 after one
quarter, led by a pair of goals by Ryan McGuire, but the Sabres got
their offense cranked up during a decisive span of about five minutes in
the second quarter. Saints Peter and Paul tied the game at 4-4 less
than a minute into the second quarter and scored again at the 10:46 mark
to take a 5-4 lead. The Sabres got an extra man goal at 9:31 in the
second to extend the lead to 6-4 and scored again on an unsettled
situation in front of the Worcester goal to push the lead to 7-4. The
fifth and final goal of the outburst came after a Sabres defender
scooped up a loose ball and ran the length of the field before finding
an open man on the crease for an 8-4 lead.
Worcester’s Harrison
Brennan stopped the bleeding with a blistering shot from the top of the
box with 6:10 remaining in the second to cut the lead to 8-5. However,
the Sabres answered quickly with another goal at the 5:17 mark to push
the lead to 9-5. Saints Peter and Paul added an extra man goal with 38
seconds left in the first half to push the lead to 10-5.
In the
third, Worcester’s Mateo Petrara scored quickly to cut the lead to 10-6,
but the Sabres answered quickly. Ryan McGuire scored again to cut the
lead to 10-7, but again, the Sabres had the answer.
After Saints
Peter and Paul scored to make it 13-7, Brennan tallied for Worcester to
cut the lead to 13-8 at the end of the third. McGuire, Alec Zarif and
Gordon Abercrombie scored fourth quarter goals for the Mallards, but the
damage had been done and Worcester fell, 16-5.
