NEW FOR WEDNESDAY: Moderate Flooding Expected In Ocean City From Nor'easter

By: Staff Writer via Maryland Coast Dispatch

The Town of Ocean City’s Emergency Services personnel is reminding citizens that effects from the approaching nor’easter will be present in Ocean City beginning this afternoon.  The initial forecast has changed slightly, projecting an increased flood level for this afternoon’s 1:49 p.m. high tide, which will result in moderate flooding in the downtown and low lying areas.

Fortunately, the peak of the storm surge will occur during the overnight hours and should the flooding forecast remain consistent, it will be considerably less than Ocean City experienced during Hurricane Sandy.  Residents, businesses and visitors in the downtown and low lying areas are encouraged to take precaution for moderate flooding.  Citizens in these areas should move vehicles to higher ground and raise electrical components from the floor area.

The nor’easter is also expected to bring sustained winds at 20-25 mph and gusts between 30-40 mph.  Less than an inch of rain is predicted, however; residents and visitors should expect roadways in the downtown area (particularly St. Louis Avenue and Philadelphia Avenue) to be impassable during tidal cycles due to the storm surge.

The Town of Ocean City’s Emergency Services personnel will continue to watch the storm and follow the forecasts as it approaches Ocean City.  Updates regarding the storm will be disseminated as necessary via the Town’s website, social media sites and through the GovDelivery system.  To subscribe to GovDelivery, visit the “City Wide Alerts” tab on the Town of Ocean City’s website at http://oceancitymd.gov.
