BERLIN -- The Wal-Mart on Route 50 near Berlin was evacuated on Monday evening when local law enforcement agencies responded to a reported bomb threat at the store.

Around 6 p.m. on Monday, Maryland State Police troopers responded to the Wal-Mart on Route 50. According to Worcester County Bureau of Investigation (WCBI) Sgt. Scott Brent, Wal-Mart officials called the MSP Berlin barrack after receiving an anonymous tip by telephone about a bomb in the cavernous new Super Wal-Mart facility near Berlin that officially opened last spring.

MSP troopers arrived on the scene and immediately evacuated the store, which was reportedly fairly busy on a Monday night. MSP troopers received assistance from the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, the Ocean City Police Department and the Berlin Police Department.

Explosive-sniffing K-9 dogs were utilized to render the building safe. After an extensive search of the building and the grounds surrounding it, no bomb or explosive device was detected. WCBI detectives are handling the investigation.
