Gov. Martin O’Malley and the Board of Public Works approved the projects at today’s meeting in Annapolis.
Among the funding measures approved was a grant of $66,000 to Berlin to replace the three old basketball courts, and to add energy-efficient lighting, spectator stands and goals at Henry Park. The courts are more than 20 years old and in poor condition despite extensive repairs in recent years. The upgrades will make the courts safer and the added amenities will accommodate more people and provide a better experience.
In addition, Ocean City will receive $30,000 to construct a shade shelter in the northeastern corner of the skate park to provide guests refuge from the sun, heat and severe weather. The area will also serve as a watering station and platform for judges during competitions.
The three-member Board of Public Works is comprised of Governor O’Malley (chair), Treasurer Nancy Kopp and Comptroller Peter Franchot. The BPW is authorized by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
