Salisbury, FBI Probe Sewing Needle Found In Candy

By: Shawn Soper via Maryland Coast Dispatch

SALISBURY — Salisbury Police are working with the FBI on an apparent Halloween candy tampering incident after a sewing needle was found in a child’s licorice candy collected on the holiday on Saturday.

Around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Salisbury Police responded to a residence on Grant Ave. for a report that a child’s Halloween candy was found to contain a sewing needle. Further investigation revealed while attempting to eat the candy on Sunday, the 15-year-old child observed a sewing needle lodged inside a single piece of Twizzler-brand candy.

The child alerted his parents, who, in turn, called the police. The initial observation of the exterior of the packaging revealed it did not appear to be tampered with. The lot number for the particular package of candy is 701-86472-004. The investigation revealed the child and his family were trick-or-treating in a vast area on Halloween on Saturday including areas of Russell Ave., Druid Hill Ave., Riverside Drive, West College Ave., Camden Ave., Evergreen Ave., and Monticello Ave.

The investigation is ongoing and Salisbury Police are working to identify the person or persons responsible. The candy was not consumed and not injuries were reported. Salisbury Police are working with the FBI on the investigation. This incident appears to be singular incident in Wicomico County. Salisbury Police and their allied law enforcement agencies are reminding parents to check their children’s candy, particularly Twizzlers, for foreign objects prior to consuming it, and to contact law enforcement if foreign objects are found.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact the Salisbury Police at 410-548-3113 or Crime Solvers at 410-548-1776.
