Seahawks Finish Strong in Bayside Championships

By: DispatchAdmin via Maryland Coast Dispatch

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team turned in a strong performance in the Bayside Conference championships last weekend, collecting four individual titles and placing highly in 12 weight classes.

The Seahawks finished second overall as a team with 253 points, close behind Kent Island, which finished first with 296. North Caroline was third with 178 total team points. Decatur’s second-place finish to Kent Island came after the Seahawks came from behind in the head-to-head meeting early this winter against the Buccaneers on a pin by Robert Kaminski in the match’s final bout.

Decatur wrestlers finished at or near the top in nearly every weight class during the Bayside championships last weekend in Cambridge, including four first-place finishes. At 103, Kaminski swept three matches and beat Parkside’s Seamus Donohue in the final to capture the title.

Andy McKahan swept his first three matches and then beat Kent Island’s Justin Thomas in the final to take Decatur’s second individual title. At 160, Andre Borradaile won all four of his matches, including a victory over Kent Island’s Dmitry Callas in the final. In Decatur’s fourth championship, Ethan Eibl swept three matches before taking out Queen Anne’s Bryan Darling in the championship.

Decatur also had three second-place finishes. At 126, Nate Rosenblatt won two matches before falling to Kent Island’s Justin Messersmith in the final. Nick Bennett finished second at 145 after winning two matches and falling to Kent Island’s Zach Smith in the final. At 195, Decatur’s Caleb Massey won two matches, then fell to Queen Anne’s Matt Olauson in the final.

At 120, T.J. Scafone won his first match, but lost in the second round. Scafone rallied to win two more, including a victory over Mardela’s Shemar Watts to take third. Jared King also finished third at 182, winning his first two, losing in the third round, then beating Wicomico’s Jordan Bivens in the third-place bout. Nevin McIntosh finished fourth at 152, after rebounding from a first-round loss to win three straight before falling in the third-place bout. Tyler VanSice finished seventh at 138 and Brett Kim finished seventh at 170.

With the strong performance in the Bayside championships, Decatur has qualified 10 wrestlers to compete in the state regional tournament this weekend. Heading to regionals for Decatur are Kaminski (106), McKahan (113), Scafone (120), Rosenblatt (126), Bennett (145), McIntosh (152), Borradaile (160), King (182), Massey (195), and Eibl (220).
