BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team fell to host Kent Island, 39-13, last Friday to drop to 1-2 in the early season.

The Seahawks ran into a buzz saw at Bayside North powerhouse Kent Island last Friday on the road and fell to the Buccaneers, 39-13. Kent Island had long kick returns on either end of the contest and sandwiched a whole lot of offense in between to trounce visiting Decatur.

The Seahawks actually scored first, going 58 yards on a 15-play drive culminated by a one-yard touchdown run by Andrew Borradaile. Justin Meekins’ extra point made it 7-0 in favor of the Seahawks early, but Kent Island quickly squashed any notion of an upset. Kent Island returned the ensuing kick-off 74 yards and tied the game at 7-7 before most of the big home crowd found their seats.

After a three-and-out by Decatur’s offense, Kent Island marched 60 yards in 10 plays to take a 14-7 lead. The Buccaneers extended their lead to 20-7 by halftime. In the second half, Decatur showed signs of getting the offense started, but turnovers and penalties doomed the Seahawk attack. Decatur scored again to cut the lead and briefly entertain thoughts of getting back in the game, but Kent Island rounded out its scoring barrage in much the same way as it started, with a 73-yard kickoff return to seal the game at 39-13.

With the loss, the Seahawks fell to 1-2 on the season. After a 41-19 win over Washington in the season opener, the Seahawks have dropped the last two including a 37-28 loss to Indian River last week and the 39-13 loss to Kent Island. Decatur hits the road tonight for a tough Bayside South matchup with Bennett before returning home next week for a game against Queen Anne’s.
