Click Here!BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team turned in a strong performance at the state 4A-3A-East region tournament last weekend, finishing sixth overall as a team among the 25 schools represented and sending four to the state championship meet this weekend.
As a team, the Seahawks finished with 70 total points, good enough for sixth place overall in the 4A-3A-East region. River Hill was first with 155, Meade was second with 84.50 and Arundel was third with 80. Decatur also had all six of its competitors place in their respective divisions and advance four to the state meet this weekend.
At 106 pounds, Decatur’s Nate Rosenblatt won two early matches before falling to Chesapeake’s Jeremy Morrow in the title match. Rosenblatt (23-10) finished in second in the weight class and will represent the Seahawks at 106 this weekend. Rosenblatt will face Kyle Gascon (31-10) of North Point in the opening round.
At 126, Decatur’s Alford Hardy won two matches and lost in his middle match to reach the third-place bout in the division. Hardy beat Connor Struck of Mount Hebron to capture third place in the 126-pound class. Hardy (34-4) will wrestle at 126 in the state championship meet this weekend and will face Tuscarora’s Xavier Spruill (31-7).
Dakota Roderick represented the Seahawks at 132 and won his first match before falling in the second. Roderick then went down to the loser’s bracket and won another match before falling to Wilde Lake’s Malick Jackson in the third-place bout to finish fourth. Roderick (30-10) will face Alex Truitt of Leonardtown (30-1) in his opening round match at states.
Ryan Kail wrestled for Decatur at 285 in the regional meet last weekend and finished fourth to advance to states. Kail fell to Stephen Lloyd of Meade in the third-place match to finish fourth. Kail will represent Decatur at 285 this weekend at states and will face Jon Boarman of La Plata in the opening round.
Decatur’s Alex Schiffer wrestled at 138 in the regionals and finished sixth overall after falling to North Harford’s Logan Smith in the fifth-place match. Kaelan Patterson (152) split two early matches before beating Bennett’s Raymond McLean in double-overtime to take fifth place at regionals. At 170, Decatur’s Jeff Evans split a few early matches to reach the fifth-place match, but fell to David Skiratko of Northeast to finish sixth.
