Seahawks Trounce Warriors, 34-1

By: Shawn J. Soper via Maryland Coast Dispatch

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity baseball team trounced visiting Pocomoke, 34-1, on a windswept field at home on Monday to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Seahawks dominated the Warriors from the start, building a huge early lead and adding to it through the middle innings. Decatur already led, 15-0, after two before a seemingly endless third inning during which Pocomoke could not record an out. After a steady parade of walks and hit batsmen with a few hits sprinkled in along with a few fielding errors, the Seahawks were up for nearly an hour in the bottom of the third inning and scored 18 more runs to extend its lead to 33-0.

It’s important to note the Seahawks did not attempt to run up the score on the Warriors and ran just station to station with the bases loaded and no outs when they had opportunities to add even more runs. Even when Decatur put the ball in play, the Warriors struggled to make the plays necessary to end the inning.

Decatur added one more in the bottom of the fourth to make it 34-0. Pocomoke got on the board in the top of the fifth inning to end the shutout bid and a no-hit bid by two Decatur pitchers. Grant Donahue started the game for the Seahawks and pitched three shutout innings, allowing no hits and just one walk. After the marathon bottom of the third, however, Donahue was replaced with junior varsity call-up Sean Colgan in the top of the fourth.

Colgan got through the fourth without yielding a hit, but surrendered one hit and a run in the bottom of the fifth, the last inning of the game shortened by the scoreboard. Decatur has now beaten Wicomico, 9-0; Mardela, 12-1, and Pocomoke, 34-1. The Seahawks have outscored their opponents by a combined 55-2.
