What’s new at Smitty McGee’s? For starters, the restaurant is completely renovated with new paint, carpet, lighting, ceiling fans, high-definition televisions, and sound system. You’ve got to see the upgrades for yourself. Secondly, owner Dawn McGee is proud to introduce new managers, who are doing an excellent job of ensuring the top-notch quality of Smitty McGee’s food and service.
What else is new? The NFL Menu has made its debut, featuring for the first time ever at Smitty McGee’s—boneless wings. If you’ve had the pleasure of trying Smitty McGee’s locally famous bone-in wings, then you know that the restaurant has its recipe down to a science. I tried the boneless wings. Take my advice. Smitty McGee’s is the wings expert—no bones about it. Available in tempting flavors like Old Bay, Asian Sesame, and Garlic Parmesan, the wings are Smitty McGee’s house special, available in quantities of 10, 20, or 50. Try the addictive Key West Wings for the perfect combination of sweet and spicy with garlic and island seasonings.
The NFL menu changes weekly. Try the All American Hot Dog topped with bacon and American cheese, or the spicy Queso Dip served in a fried flour tortilla shell. Coinciding with Mexican Monday, the NFL menu this week included Pork Quesadilla, which is a delicious concoction of pork marinated in BBQ-Key West sauce and layered with melted shredded cheese and caramelized onions.
Boasting Mexican-themed recipes, the NFL menu also featured Fajitas, Nachos, Burritos, Chimichangas, and Mexican Pizza. Quesadillas are available with Crab, Veggie, or Pork, in addition to classic styles like beef, cheese, and chicken. Excellent for a cool autumn afternoon, the Chicken Tortilla Soup consists of chicken, beans, corn, red peppers, tortilla strips, and sour cream in a spicy broth.
This week, I invited my favorite “uptown girl,” Regina, to Smitty McGee’s, which is located on Lighthouse Road in “West Fenwick Ireland,” Delaware, just past the Maryland state line. We tried a few more items on the NFL Menu, including the Mexican Lasagna—stacked tortillas, taco meat, cheese whiz, refried beans, shredded cheese, lettuce, tomato, and sour cream. Our experienced server, Christina, is a longtime staple at Smitty McGee’s. She presented us with new Shrimp Tacos topped with spicy boom boom sauce, lettuce, fresh salsa verde, cheese, and lime. These tacos are huge and overstuffed with fresh shrimp. Hard or soft tacos are also available with beef, Grouper, or Rockfish.
We also couldn’t resist ordering the Taco Nachos—tortilla chips topped with taco meat, lettuce, tomato, melted cheese, sour cream, and picante. We were tempted to try the Killer Nachos with chili, salsa, jalapeños, and black olives. The nachos, and all of the items on the NFL Menu, are discounted and affordable.
A new fall menu is ready to make its debut this week at Smitty McGee’s. The restaurant is popular for its burgers, including the Montreal Bacon Bleu Burger with Montreal Steak seasoning, bleu cheese crumbles, and bacon. The Crabby Patty is a fresh ground beef burger topped with Crab Dip and melted cheese. Locals love the Dirty Chicken Sandwich—boneless chicken breast smothered in secret spices and topped with Ranch dressing and provolone cheese. The Reuben is also popular, as is the Rock Fish Sandwich and the Tenderloin Sandwich—grilled filet mignon topped with sautéed onions, melted provolone, and horseradish sauce.
Smitty McGee’s also serves up Sliders. Miniature potato rolls are stuffed with Death Burgers, Chicken Littles, Rock Fish, Buffalo Chicken, or Wild West—grilled burgers with BBQ sauce, cheddar, bacon, and fried onions. Or, try the Teenie Wienie Sliders.
Healthy options are featured on the menu too. Try the Southwest Salad for a mix of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, corn, black beans, shredded cheese, and shredded tortilla strips. Maryland Crab and Cream of Crab are available, as well as Chili or Chili Bake in a bread bowl.
My favorite appetizer is the Grouper Fingers, which are hand breaded. Crab Topped Cheese Fries and Garlic Crab Toast are additional popular appetizers. And, remember to visit the Raw Bar for tasty treats like Garlic Mussels, Clams Casino, and Stuffed Mushroom Caps.
Fall Happy Hour has begun at Smitty McGee’s, taking place Sunday through Friday from 11 AM to 7 PM, and Saturday from 4-7 PM. Enjoy drink discounts, plus 75-cent Clams and Oysters from the Raw Bar. Wings and Steamed Shrimp are also on special during Happy Hour.
Plenty of fun is to be had at Smitty McGee’s every day. The restaurant is an official Keno spot, with huge flat-screen televisions broadcasting the popular game. It’s also a headquarters for the Delaware State Lottery. Try your luck! Team Trivia has returned to Smitty McGee’s on every Tuesday night. House band Randy Lee Ashcraft performs each Thursday. On Fridays, Rick Artz of Love Seed Mama Jump impresses the crowds. Entertainment varies on Saturday nights, with acts like Ginge; Bo Dickerson and Lauren Glick bringing their flavor to your ears.
Smitty McGee’s is participating in the Jack Daniel’s Statue Contest, for which they’ve painted a life-size statue of Jack Daniels. They’ve done a great job so far. Come judge for yourself.
