Sonic Notes

By: Jenny Samuels via Coconut Times
October is breast cancer awareness month, and I’m so excited to take part in the Pink Ribbon Pinups fundraiser at the Steer Inn Tavern on Saturday, October 8. Kid Davis & The Bullets will provide the rockabilly soundtrack during the day, and Full Blown Cherry will takeover the stage at night. During the event, 1975 and older hot rods, classics, antiques, rat rods, deadbeaters, trucks, and specialties will compete for prizes and trophies. Register at the Steer Inn on the day of the event, which is from 1:00 to 5:00.
Please stop by the Pink Ribbon Pinups booth and say hello to my friends and me. To raise money for the American Cancer Society, we’ll be auctioning off gifts from local and national businesses like Dimensions, Unheard Skate Supply, Raggamuffin Jewelry & Clothing, and more. Make sure to stay for the after party, when Full Blown Cherry brings its high-energy surf rock and 1950s-style swing and rockabilly sounds to the Steer Inn.
Saturday night, October 8, is definitely a night for live music. Not only will the Steer Inn Tavern throw a rager to support a good cause, but also Coins Restaurant & Pub on 28th Street will host classic rock band Tranzfusion. At Seacrets, singer/songwriter Jenny Boyle will showcase her indie pop/rock talent at 5:00 p.m. Also, add the Purple Moose Saloon to your list of hotspots. Classic rock band The Front is scheduled to perform at the Moose on Friday and Saturday nights.
Another noteworthy event this week is the last Fager’s Island Monday Night Deck Party of 2011. On October 10, locals will flock to Fager’s Island to celebrate the last deck party with The Chest Pains. Playing classic new age and modern rock hits, The Chest Pains have built quite a fan base in Ocean City. Of course, DJ Rob Cee will be spinning his popular dance hits to help locals send off the 2011 season in style.
On Wednesday evening, BJ’s on the Water presents Sir Rod paying tribute to Rod Stewart’s greatest hits at 5:00. Rumor has it that DJ Wax got hitched, switched careers, and moved out of town. We wish him all the best, and hope he’ll revisit our resort town often. In the meantime, Seacrets welcomes DJ Darth Fader to “Little Friday” parties on Thursday nights. My girlfriends and I have a hot date to celebrate a birthday this Thursday while he spins our favorite songs.
Karaoke is always a good time, right? Several bars throughout Ocean City host karaoke nights throughout the week. On Saturday, October 8, 707 Sports Bar & Grille presents Hey Mick Karaoke at 9:00. If you’re uptown on Wednesday night, October 12, check out Smitty McGee’s with DJ Hulk Karaoke at 10:00. If you’re downtown, swing over to Racetrack Road for Hey Mick Karaoke at the Steer Inn Tavern. Also, my girl DJ Marla is quickly creating a name for herself in the emcee industry. She’ll be spinning tunes at the Steer Inn Tavern at 8:00 on Thursday, October 13.
On a side note, as part of Ocean City’s 14th Annual Endless Summer Cruisin’ 2011, fans are invited to meet Paul Michael Glaser, who played the role of Detective David Starsky on the classic television show Starsky and Hutch. You can meet him from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Ocean City Convention Center on Friday, October 7, and at the inlet parking lot on Saturday, October 8, and from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 9.
As October flies by, remember to check Coconut Times for fundraisers for breast cancer awareness. Have a wonderful week, everyone.
