I'm beginning to wonder if the weather is ever going to warm up! Shouldn't we all be decked out in our summer threads with the air conditioning cranked up in both the car and the house by now? No? Okay, maybe at least the windows open in the bedroom at night to let the fresh air in? No again?
I tell you what: It has been downright chilly this past week. It's the middle of May, and I'm not going to stand for this anymore! Know how I like to get into a summer state of mind and beat the gloomy weather blues? With some sweet, sweet reggae music. Lucky for you, this week is so chock full o'reggae, you'll forget about the weather all together.
This Friday, May 11th, The Kaleb Brown Band will be bringing their infectious rhythms to Waterman's Seafood Company on Route 50 in West Ocean City at 8pm. In this day and age, I feel that it is so hard to find music packed with a positive message. Kaleb restores my faith in such things by bringing upbeat lyrics and vibes to the musical table. Whether he is armed with simply his acoustic guitar and soulful voice; or whether he is plugged in with the band backing him, Kaleb Brown always delivers in the entertainment department. If you have not yet had the chance to see them perform, I highly recommend it. Also, Justin Mays has just been added to the mix as their new lead guitarist, so help him feel at home and welcome at Friday's show, as well as the upcoming shows for the season.
If you decide to head over the bridge and into town later on in the evening, stop by Seacrets on 49th Street and de bay. Our friends in S.T.O.R.M., from Washington DC, will be playing at the Tiki Bar both Friday and Saturday starting at 9pm. Later on in the week, local favorites Zion Reggae Band will be making the people dance in the sand on Monday, May 14th at 9pm; and seasoned veterans, Rising Sun Reggae Band will play both Wednesday the 16th and Thursday the 17th at the 9 o'clock hour in the Tiki Bar area as well.
When the weekend is drawing to a close and you want to relax with family and friends on a Sunday afternoon (which also happens to be Mother's Day!), check out the Everett Spells Jazz Brunch at Fager's Island at 60th Street in the bay. I have been treating my mom to brunch here for a few years now. Be sure to get there on the early side, as the place gets crowded quickly! Despite the buzzing atmosphere, Everett Spells calms the whole room with his smooth sax skills. Combine the spectacular views of the bay with the delicious brunch that the folks at Fager's serve up, and add a side of live jazz? I can't think of a better way to spend a beautiful Sunday morning at the beach with one of my best friends on her special day.
If you happen to be around the vicinity of Fager's again on Monday, and you haven't been to a deck party this season, do yourself a favor and go on the 14th! Ocean City's legendary party DJ, Batman, will be priming the happy hour crowd at 5pm on the deck, spinning all the great tunes from yesterday and today. At 9pm, DJ Rob Cee will take the reigns and pack the dance floor; and at 10pm, my dear friend, Nate Clendenen and the rest of the boys in the Electric Company will be playing inside on stage.
Wow, there is SO much going on in town these days! I don't want to hear it from any of you about how bored you are, or that you can't think of anything to do. The spring season is well under way, with summer soon to follow, so get on out there, despite the unseasonably cool weather, and support local music; local DJ's; and local businesses. Until next week, friends...See you on the dance floor!
