Sonic Notes

By: Kasey Briggs via Coconut Times
Thinking ahead to future Ocean City events I'm finding it difficult to top last weekend’s festivities. Friday night at Pepper’s was something that not myself nor anyone who was there will soon forget.
Fortunately the music scene here is still in full stride and I'm nowhere near done searching the right people and the right places.
When I'm not working twenty-four seven or starting mosh pits that leave craters, I enjoy a sunset on a deck next to the bay. Sometimes there's music and sometimes there's not. Since the article is called "sonic notes" and not "Kasey's first date rituals" I'll focus on the people that make it a most enjoyable experience.
With most of us local and hospitality types staring down a little time off with a pocket full of cash I offer up a couple of my favorite solo/duo acoustic acts and the bayside bars at which to catch them.
First I feel the need to throw out a slight disclaimer. When I began writing sonic notes I vowed to not just write a second version of who's where when. I lied. Well, not completely. With a 4-day work schedule of 40 hours, three gigs in three days and a dog to take care of, I had only enough time to see a few bands this weekend. My own and anyone with whom we were playing. The dishes and laundry are still pending..
So now with a little time off coming this weekend I'm looking forward to jumping on my bike and crawling around to stalk some real entertaining musicians I haven't gotten to see all summer. Most I consider good friends.
First on the roster is Walt Ferozic, aka "Walt the Freak". There's many different versions of how he got the name but mine is the simple and clean one. As a musician I would consider anyone who can rock out a four-hour gig without a break a total freak. Solid, energetic versions of classic rock mixed with newer hits is his specialty.
Walt has a full schedule all year and is actually sponsored by jagermeister. This weekend you can catch him friday the 24th at the 19th Hole at the corner of 611 and Sunset Avenue in West Ocean City or Saturday at the Island Time Cafe in Sunset Island.
Next is another hard working man in the business, Mr. Scott Glorioso. I pray that I get to be the first to get his name spelled correctly. Scott is on a steady regiment at Bahama Mamas downtown Thursday through Sunday.
Scott is an acoustic solo artist whose favorites are reggae and classic rock but he can improvise any request you make even if he has to fake it. Yeah, he's that good, so order up another round and let him work the magic.
My last one for this week is Darin Engh. This half of Opposite Directions is one of my all time favorites and holds my utmost respect for professionalism and talent in our musical community.
The first time I heard Darin I was wandering aimlessly in the 3rd Street area and heard this fabulous live version of the Little River Band's "Aimee". As I sought out where the sweet sound was coming from, I ran into this kind soul and couldn't walk away until it was done.
You can catch Darin every Friday at Coconuts at 1 pm. Stick around for power hour at 5 and get ready to get wasted with the locals favorite happy hour
That's all for this week, folks. I'm counting down the days til my tri-weekly day off and don't intend to waste one second of it indoors. Maybe for the first time this summer I will wear something resembling a tan. If not I assure you I still wear a buzz better than most.
