Sonic Notes

By: Cathy Germann via Coconut Times

This week I want to start with a dedication to my daughters, Kelly & Madison, and to all the other mothers who will kiss their children good-bye as they head out to experience new adventures without us by their side. May be a bit sappy, but keeping in the spirit of music, I want to quote Martina McBride… “I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance, never settle for the path of least resistance; Living might mean taking chances, but they're worth taking; Lovin' might be a mistake, but it's worth making; Don't let some hell bent heart leave you bitter,  when you come close to selling out, reconsider; give the heavens above more than just a passing glance; and when you get the choice to sit it out or dance… I hope you dance”.
Well, it’s the beginning of the end of summer. But it’s not over yet, and plenty of music to keep it going.  Are there any Elton fans out there? If so, head to Fager’s Island this Sunday for a tribute to Sir Elton by Captain Fantastic, the premier Elton John tribute Band. I have seen this show before and it kept me perpetually entertained. They do a great job of a carbon copy impression using appropriate ostentatious garb, and dazzling lights. This six person band play an abundance of instruments that include a baby grand, multiple electric guitars, basses, drums & a mandolin as well as synthesizers, pedal steel &  keyboards. They also engage in audience participation to enhance the fun.
For a more low key option, but nevertheless just as entertaining, head out to listen to Blake Haley at the Angler this and every Thursday. Blake’s solo acoustic act is sure to please, not to mention the incredible view & great menu at The Angler. He also steps it up a notch when he is joined by vocalist Daniele Hall, bassist Kasey Briggs and drummer Skip Dixon in a band that call themselves Haleytown. It’s tough to find good country music in this area, but Haleytown is definitely worth checking out.
If you are over in West OC tonight (8/16), stop into the 19th Hole where you will find another talented acoustic solo artist, Walt Farozic. His act is dynamic and engaging. I have run into Walt several times this summer and his enthusiasm for music and life in general is refreshing.
If you’re up for a bit of reggae, there are a couple of great choices. Zion Reggae Band has been singing to us for many years and it’s always gratifying. I was able to see them during the White Marlin Open at Harbour Island. There was a bit of comedy in their act that day, when some spectator who thought he was worthy of singing with them made a spectacle of himself. They were very polite, although you could tell they were less than pleased. The guy finally got off the stage when he couldn’t remember the words to the rest of the song. Be sure to see Chino, Ivan, Fergie, Paul & Eddie B. (manager) on Sunday at the 45th Street Taphouse  and August 31st at  Coconuts.
I want to wish my Madison the best of luck at VCU this year and my Kelly the same at California State – Channel Islands, and to all those headed out to colleges and universities. Remember, your moms are going to miss you desperately, so don’t forget to call regularly!
“Music takes us out of the actual and whispers to us dim secrets that startle our wonder as to who we are, and for what, whence, and whereto”  – Ralph Waldo Emerson
