I just love this time of year. It’s a bit cooler, more relaxing, yet plenty to keep us entertained. A visit to The 19th Hole last week proved to be a musical pleasure. A band by the name of Fat Catfish was performing. They were outstanding. Three band members included Vincent D’Addio, Todd “Slim” Smith on bass & Vince McCool on trumpet. They had a great sound. One of their songs was an old favorite my mom used to sing called King of the Road. If you get a chance, check them out.
This week gives new meaning to the phrase “let’s get ready to rumble”. Delmarva Bike Week is in ‘full throttle.’ This event attracts over 150,000 motorcycling enthusiasts to the area. The musical options are numerous, especially if you love good ole rock n’ roll.
Happening simultaneously at the inlet lot & convention center is OC Bike Fest. This is a The four-day gated event with concerts, stunt shows, custom bike builders & vendors. A $25 wrist band covers all events including a top notch lineup on 2 stages. It’s a 70’s rock band fan dream weekend. Starting this musical extravaganza at 1pm today (Fri.), is Blizzard of Ozzy playing solo Ozzy Osborne tunes as well as songs from the Sabbath era. A long list of mind-blowing acts follows. Three young men that comprise the Jimi Hendrix tribute band, Jamiah on Fire and the Red Machine will step up twice this weekend. This trio range from 11 -13 years old and has been together for 5 years. They have performed at Blues Festivals world-wide and opened for an impressive list of bands. Other tribute bands appearing are Kashmir, the nation's #1 Led Zeppelin show and at Seacrets Livewire an AC/DC tribute band takes the stage. The list also features Bastard Bearded Irishmen, an Irish rock band inspired by Dropkick Murphys & Flogging Molly. Main acts include War; one of the best funk bands from the early 70’s; British rock band, Foghat; classic rock bands, America and Three Dog Night. Visit delmarvabikeweek.com or ocbikefest.com for full schedules. For more classic rock options this weekend, visit The Purple Moose for Surreal, Seacrets for Steal the Sky or Trader Lee’s for rock n’ roll all day & night. All of our favorite local bands will fill stages throughout town as well. Visit coconuttimes.com for a full list.
This week’s events will include many rides in memory or in support of loved ones and heroes. One in particular close to my heart is a bike ride for ‘Prayers for Steven’ beginning at Trader Lee’s this Saturday at 11am. Twenty year old Steven is the son & nephew of dear friends of mine who is fighting for his life. Steven lies unconscious at PRMC from a drug overdose. Although this article is generally themed lighthearted, I would like to use my public voice to share some thoughts. Heroin use in our area has grown to epidemic proportions. This addiction holds no prejudice and includes athletic honor students from good families. Don’t ever assume your own child or friend couldn’t be a victim because these demons called heroin dealers are professionals and prey on all. All it takes is a moment of weakness. With enough awareness and action, this rising epidemic could be turned around. So please send out Prayers for Steven, his family, and for all those who may be suffering from a similar tragedy. This week also commemorated 12 years since the attack on our country. My thoughts also go out to the families of those unfortunate victims and fallen heroes from that day we will never forget.
On a lighter note, the weather forecast this week looks perfect for hitting the open road. Nobody around here will be able to say “there is nothing going on” this week. This town will rumble with reverberation and the music will be playing all day and night. In the words of Sammy Hagar – “Get on your bad motor scooter and ride.”
