Troupe prepares for ‘killer’ improv at murder mystery

By: Sheila R. Cherry, Associate Editor via Bayside Gazette
OCEAN PINES — To paraphrase a famous quote, sometimes murder mystery dinners are like a box of chocolates – you never know what you are going to get. Get a Clue Productions, the brainchild of Ted and Maria Demetriou, will perform an audience interactive whodunit at the Woodlands of Ocean Pines on Feb. 8.
The murder mystery will be a bit different from the usual Sherlock Holmes or Miss Marple fare. You never read about Miss Marple crooning a sultry a cappella country tune in western attire.
The country music-themed show will be performed improv style, which is likely to spice up Valentine’s Day date night with a bit of comedy and surprising twists. Audience members will be part of the murder investigation, the troupe said.
“See how well your detective skills are at solving a murder while you enjoy dinner and a show with your sweetheart!” according to an announcement for the event.
But don’t forget to bring your country boots and hats.
The Demetrious have been performing and directing acting troupes for the past 10 years and their performance Friday night will be from an original script, said Ted Demetriou, an insurance broker.
The cast also includes Jim Adcock, an artist; Edie Brennan, a Realtor; Graham Caldwell a voice performer; and Elizabeth Kain-Bolen, executive director of the Ocean Pines Chamber of Commerce.
Ted Demetriou said the actors were learning the personalities of their characters and will improvise throughout the scriptin the manner their characters would respond to the various twists and turns as the mystery unfolds. “If your character is a weenie, be a weenie,” he told the performers during a Feb. 4 rehearsal.
But the audience will get drawn into the whole sordid affair as they get assigned as associates of various characters before the show. The associates will add to the clues each of the actors deliver as the play unfolds and the diners will be encouraged to use those clues and associations to solve the mystery.
Prizes will be awarded by drawing from among the successful amateur sleuths.
The performance is scheduled from 6-9 p.m. Tickets cost $40 each and includes dinner and the show. A cash bar will be provided.
