I was listening to Ocean 98.1 and the DJ who calls himself Bulldog. He was saying that he had always been told that you cannot wear white after Labor Day. I guess he was looking out his window there at Seacrets, saw a lot of white and was wondering what was going on.
Well, I don’t know who said this, when or why. Yes, I know, vacations are over, school is back in session, but summer is not over, people! Fall does not officially start until September 22. I will agree that maybe wearing white shoes is a bit much, but white pants are still okay. I also pulled out my crisp white shirts and presssed out the wrinkles, ready for the first cool day. I have always loved to see a nice button-down white shirt with a pair of nice-fitting jeans on a guy or a girl any time of the year. A very sexy classic look. As the evenings start to get cooler, a pretty white sweater over your summer dress that you just can’t put away yet, is a must.
We can take advice from the talking head designers but common sense and your own style should rule the day. I don’t really think that some of them even have a clue about what makes us look good out here in the real world. So, wear your white pants through September, then when October rolls around, check out the winter whites. You can still wear the long-sleeved crispy white blouses all year long; I do.
One of those talking head designers came up with UGGs. I don’t even own a pair. I think their name says it all - they are so ugly and not flattering. I’m told that they are very warm and they feel good. I’m thinking they must be spin-offs from bedroom slippers - warm, fuzzy and feel good. I know some of you won’t agree with me on this, but my articles are about beauty tips. From the start of this fashion faux pas, I thought U-G-L-Y - I.E. their name. I think it had to be a man who designed them because a woman would not have even let them out of her design room... just saying.
Sure does look like every ten or twenty years, the styles seem to come back, some like a bad penny. I think some of them are from a designer who can’t come up with anything new, so he reinvents old ones just to keep his name out there. There are, however, some older styles that make a woman look really good; and we should welcome them back; such as the empire waist blouses and dresses. This design goes centuries; re-emerging periodically. It shows off, and enhances in many cases, the bustline. The empire style also covers or camouflages your stomach and your hips. So any shape and size would look good wearing this style.
A few of the fashion disasters from the past should never be brought back; such as the MooMoo or the drop-crotch pants. Those are unflattering to any person and a real mistake. Some men designers really know how to enhance a woman’s or a man’s body for a great look - others, not so much. The wrap dress ties at the side and is a very flattering style that has been reintroduced this season. I’m sure we will be seeing a lot of the wrap dress throughout the fall and winter. All shapes and sizes will be able to wear this dress.
The great lycra/spandex and micro fiber materials are creating a brand new look on some of the older styles and they’re working for all of us ladies. so whoever we have to thank for these new materials, we like them and keep them coming. On one of the daytime talk shows a fashion expert made a comment that you should never go out in your track suit and sneakers unless you were going to the gym. WHAT? In the fall and winter you will find many of us running our errands, going to the bank, grocery store or shopping in our so-called track suit and Skechers because we want to be comfortable and still look good. Once again, a person who is not in touch with the real world. So, ladies and gents, if you feel good and you look good, that’s all that counts ... just saying.
